Alpha 60 release Summer '06 with a few stories in the seams. In a triumphant 2005, they exhibited at Vivienne Westwood's Retrospective at the National Art Gallery, were picked up by Jen Laugesen's Japanese fashion agent and returned to Paris for the invite only Rendezvous Show.
And the celebrations continue, this month Alpha 60 exhibit Summer '06 at Oyster Magazines 10th Birthday. Always cinematic, lit with surreal allusions, Summer '06 is titled Angels with Dirty Faces. For brother and sister team Alex & Georgie Cleary it's the launch of their most progressive range. Vacillating between street and chic they weave sophistication with downbeat nonchalance. Classic looks are reworked with unexpected twists; boys wear chiffon and argyle prints conceal rock stars.
The collection salutes H G Wells' The Island of Dr Moreau and perennial godfather, Jean-Luc Goddard. Signature graphics depict Mick Jagger lost on Dr Moreau's hybrid island. He dances with mermaids and encounters Alpha 60's muse, Anna Karina, embodied as a plant. Georgie explains, "I draw to escape. When I look in my sketchbook I'm not really sure why Mick Jagger's girlfriend is a mermaid or why Anna Karina is a plant... I get lost in my imagination." For men, highlights are the chiffon Forever Gordard vest and silk Lost Soul Bomber jacket with satin gold lining. The Dr Moreau dinner jacket is paired with Science tailored pants and the 1977 neon trimmed cardigan meets another world of tees. Laced with neon, stripes, bold prints and headlines - it's modern elegance. Women's heartbreakers are feminine chiffon tops with subtle prints coupled with shorts or the irresistible cross-back jumpsuit. Vibrant colours and graphics feature on elegant dresses with drop waists, halter necks and round 40's style collars. It's playfully stylish.
